Customarily a home’s kitchen has a view through a window to the outside - either a view to the front yard or the back. This lovely Los Gatos home had a view from the kitchen that was through an atrium, or open-air courtyard in the middle of the house (see before picture). It was a nice view, but it took up a considerable amount of critical space needed for the kitchen. Our job was to replace the atrium with a larger, more modern open kitchen. The challenge: how do we accomplish this without loosing all the natural light the owners were accustomed to? And, what will this new addition do to the roofline? The answer turned out to be quite simple in the end. We used a low-pitched roof just under the ridge lines of the existing roof with two large skylights in an open light well. The neighbors were happy with the new look from the outside and the owners love all the light. They sent us a very nice thank you card :-)
